Altera's configuration devices provide the easiest configuration solution to SRAM-based Mercury, Excalibur, APEX 20K, ACEX 1K, FLEX 10K, FLEX 6000, and FLEX 8000 devices. The configuration devices range in size from the 64-Kbit EPC1064 to the 16M-bit EPC16 device, the industry's largest serial configuration device.Table 1 shows the many features that make it easy to design with Altera programmable logic devices (PLDs).

Table 1. Configuration Device Features
Feature
Benefit
High density   Offers the easiest configuration solution for all SRAM based devices
In-system programmability (ISP)   EPC2 and larger devices can be programmed in-system using the Joint Test Action Group (JTAG) test ports
Fast configuration time   Configuration speeds of up to 320 megabits per second (Mbps)
Parallel programming   Configures up to eight devices simultaneously with single configuration devices or using an 8-bit wide data stream to further improve configuration speed
Compression   Devices can store 30 Mbits of data in 16 Mbits of memory using compression

The Quartus II and MAX+PLUS II software provides software design support, and the Altera master programming unit (MPU) and third-party programming hardware provides programming support. Table 2 lists the available configuration devices.
